Frequently asked questions

What hosts and guests ask about MokoRoll, the shared disposable camera app: setting up a film, joining one, the film stocks, the reveal, what it costs, and what happens to the photos. If yours is not here, email us.

Getting started

What is MokoRoll?

MokoRoll is a shared disposable camera app for events. A host creates a film for the event and shares a QR code or link; every guest shoots a limited roll from their own phone, 36 photos each; and nobody sees a photo until the reveal the host chose, when the whole roll develops at once in one shared album.

How do I set up a MokoRoll film?

Sign up on the web at mokoroll.com or in the MokoRoll iOS app, then create a film: name the event, pick its date, choose how many guests it admits and how many shots each guest gets, choose when the photos develop, and pick a film stock. The app then gives you a QR code and a link to share. It takes about a minute.

Is MokoRoll available on iPhone, Android and the web?

MokoRoll is a native iPhone app on the App Store and a web app at mokoroll.com that runs in any modern browser, including Android phones. Hosts can create and run a film from either. Guests never need to install anything: the invite link opens the camera in their browser.

For guests

Do guests need to download an app or create an account?

No. A guest scans the host's QR code or opens the invite link, enters a name and an email address, and starts shooting in the browser. There is no password to set and no app to install. Guests who already have a MokoRoll account can sign in so the roll is saved to it, and anyone can add an account afterwards to find the album again.

How many photos does each guest get?

Every film includes up to 36 photos per guest, the length of a real roll of film. The host sets the roll when creating the film, anywhere from 3 to 36 shots, and can lift the cap entirely with the "Unlimited photos per guest" add-on in the iOS app. The camera shows each guest how many shots they have left, and when the roll is used up, it is used up.

Can guests see their own photos before the reveal?

Yes. Each guest can see their own shots in the film at any time. Everyone else's photos stay hidden until the reveal the host chose. The hiding is enforced on MokoRoll's servers rather than by the app, so there is no setting on a phone that gets around it.

What does the host see about a guest?

The host sees the name and email address a guest joined with, how they joined (link or QR scan), their device type, when they joined, and the two optional boxes they ticked or left unticked on the join screen: whether the host may contact them about future events, and whether the host may share their photos from this event. Both are off by default.

Photos and film stocks

What is a film stock in MokoRoll?

A film stock is the look every photo in the film develops in. MokoRoll has 28 hand-tuned looks built as real 3D colour LUTs, in colour negative, slide, cinema and black and white families, plus Original for no grade at all. The host picks one when creating the film, every guest's viewfinder shows it live, and the ungraded original of every shot is kept.

When do the photos develop?

The host chooses when creating the film. "Right away" shows photos to everyone as they are taken; "End of the night" develops the whole roll at 11 PM on the day of the event; "Pick a date" develops it at 11 AM on a day the host chooses. Until that moment each guest sees only their own shots, and at that moment everyone sees everything at once.

Can we download the photos?

Yes. Once the roll has developed, anyone in the film can download a single photo or save the whole album as one zip file, at the resolution the camera shot it with the film stock baked in. In the iOS app a download goes through the share sheet, so it can land in Photos, Files or an AirDrop.

Pricing and platforms

Is MokoRoll free?

Yes, for events with up to 5 guests. A free film includes 36 photos per guest, the QR code and link, every film stock and the full reveal and download. There is no card to enter and guests never pay anything. Bigger events buy a one-time guest tier, from $1.99 for 10 guests up to $99.99 for an unlimited number.

Where do I buy a bigger guest tier?

In the MokoRoll iOS app, as an Apple In-App Purchase. Each tier is a one-time purchase that covers one film for as long as that film lasts; nothing recurs. A film created on the web starts on the free 5-guest tier and can be upgraded from the app, including after guests have already joined. The host does not count against the guest limit.

Is there a subscription?

No. Everything MokoRoll sells today is a one-time purchase for one event: a guest tier, or the $9.99 "Unlimited photos per guest" add-on. Prices shown on mokoroll.com are US App Store list prices; Apple sets the equivalent in every other storefront.

Privacy

Who can see the photos in a film?

Only the people in that film: the host and the guests who joined it, and only after the reveal. Photos are stored in a private bucket and served through signed links that expire after an hour, issued only to members of the film. MokoRoll shows no advertising, uses no cross-app tracking, never sells personal data and does not use photos to train machine-learning models.

How do I delete my photos or my account?

Any guest can remove their own photos, and the host can remove any photo from their film. Deleting an account, under Settings in the app, permanently removes the profile, every film it owns, all of its photos and its guest records, with no undo. Email trymokoroll@gmail.com from the account's address and MokoRoll will do it for you within 30 days.

How do I contact MokoRoll?

Email trymokoroll@gmail.com. It is the one support address, for questions, refunds, data requests and reports, and it is answered by the people who make the app.
